Like it or not, I am sometimes influenced by reviews when deciding to watch a movie. A bad habit, I must admit,
but I am addicted to reading other's opinion. It helps me to keep my mind open as the critics are mostly divided, even to
smallest degree. I would usually first visit the trio saints of movie reviews, James Berardinelli, Roger Ebert and Mary Ann Johansen.
Ebert didn't have a review. It is understood, since Fox didn't open the movie for preview - mostly predicting that the studio
already know that it has a stinkeroo in their hand. New York Times (Dave Kehr) began its review with, "Twentieth Century Fox
threw its baby to the wolves yesterday, opening ''Alien vs. Predator'' nationally on Friday without holding advance screenings
for film reviewers." How about that? Greedy as hell, and also to prepare
myself, I sharpened my commando knife and packed a loaded gun, including a bullet in the chamber, before going for this movie.
Halfway, I had to put them down, and gave in to the intense excitement. Alien VS Predator (AVP) started off as a comic book, after the success of the original Alien movies and the Predator movies.
I am not sure how much they have lifted from the comic book, but, as I mentioned earlier, it works well second half onwards
as a good sci-fi action flick. This is the premise of the movie. Predators, as we all know, like to hunt. For centuries, they have been breeding
Aliens, to hunt them. And they have this pyramid, which is maze that reconfigure itself every ten minutes. The walls, ceiling
and the floor moves, give the victim, or the hunter, a new trap every time. The filmmaker has obviously disregarded the whole backstory found in earlier Alien and Predator movies. I felt
it should be that way, because if it were to refer to the revered first Alien and Predator, they are just insulting themselves.
Here, they have obviously been reading Chariots of Gods. Predators WERE the aliens that came to earth and gave men
civilisation (and responsible for the Pyramid architecture, oh man, I'm getting sick) Flash forward to present times, we see a team of explorers, comprised of archaeologists, adventurers and other
characters you see in mission movies, goes to Antarctica, where they get signals, which, they later find out, emanated from
the mentioned Pyramid. Except for the lead, played by
Sanaa Lathan, all the other characters are just dinners waiting to be lapped up by both the Alien and Predator. Halfway, all
of them get wiped out. We have Alexa Woods, played by Lathan, to fend herself. And guess what? She does it well. She is not
Ripley, but we don’t mind rooting for her. Oh yeah, there are the usual prerequisite in-jokes and reference along the
way – enough for die-hard fans. Here onwards, it takes a lot
of suspension of belief to follow what is going on. As for me, I enjoyed the battle the Predator and Alien engages. Fun. Awesome.
Good or bad reviews go and watch this flick. It is definitely better than Troy. |
